What Is DALI Dimming?
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an open digital communication protocol for lighting control, standardised under IEC 62386. Unlike analogue 0-10V dimming, DALI enables:

- Bidirectional communication — fixtures report back status, fault conditions, and lamp hours
- Scene programming — up to 16 scenes per group, instantly recallable
- Integration — connects to BMS, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting systems
- Two-wire control bus — no polarity, simple low-voltage wiring alongside power circuit
DALI vs 0-10V vs TRIAC: Which to Specify?
DALI — Best for commercial projects requiring individual control, scene management, BMS integration, or energy reporting. Standard in offices, retail, hospitality, and public buildings across Europe.
0-10V — Simple analogue dimming via a low-voltage control wire. Good for zones where all fixtures dim together. Lower cost than DALI but no individual addressability or feedback.
TRIAC — Phase-cut dimming using a standard wall dimmer. Most economical, suitable for residential and simple retail applications. Not suitable for large commercial projects.
For European commercial projects — retail, office, hospitality — DALI is increasingly specified as standard, and many tender documents require DALI 2 compliance.
DALI 1 vs DALI 2: What Changed?
DALI 2 (IEC 62386 Part 2) introduced stricter compliance testing and new device types including:
- Input devices: occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, push buttons
- Improved interoperability between products from different manufacturers
- Mandatory certification testing (previously voluntary)
When specifying for new commercial projects, always specify DALI 2 to ensure full interoperability and future-proofing.

- Request dimming range test data — confirm 1% minimum dim level
- Check flicker performance — request flicker measurements (important for broadcast and video environments)
- Confirm lm/W at the CRI level you need — DALI driver adds minimal overhead; efficacy should remain ≥ 150 lm/W at Ra90
- Request IES files for your specific CCT and power combination
