Linear trunking systems have become the preferred solution for large-area commercial lighting — combining energy efficiency, flexible optics, and clean architectural aesthetics in a single continuous system.
For warehouse managers, retail chain specifiers, and electrical contractors working on high-bay commercial projects, this guide covers what a linear trunking system is, what optical options are available, and how to select the right configuration for your application.
What Is a Linear Trunking System?
A linear trunking system is a continuous-run commercial lighting solution where a structural track carries both the electrical supply and the light fittings. Unlike individual pendant or recessed fixtures, a trunking system creates an unbroken line of light across a space.
Key components of a linear trunking system:
- Trunking rail — the structural backbone carrying the electrical bus and housing the optical insert
- LED light engine — the LED strip and driver assembly inside the trunking
- Optical insert (lens) — controls beam distribution; multiple options available
- End caps and connectors — straight, L-bend, T-junction, and flexible connectors for any layout
- Mounting hardware — surface, suspended, and recessed installation options
Multiple Optical Angles: Why It Matters
One of the most important — and often overlooked — specifications for linear trunking is the optical lens type. Different applications require fundamentally different light distributions. YNDLUX linear trunking is available with six optical configurations:

1. Central Linear Anti-Glare Lens
Narrow central beam with built-in anti-glare louvres. Ideal for offices, showrooms, and retail environments where visual comfort and UGR <19 compliance are required. Minimises ceiling reflection and direct glare for seated occupants.

2. Central Linear Transparency Lens
Clear lens with a focused central beam and maximum lumen output. Best for high-bay industrial and warehouse applications where lumen delivery is prioritised over glare control. Delivers the highest lux levels per watt.

3. Matrix Lens
Wide-angle beam distribution for even illumination across large floor areas. The matrix pattern breaks up the light source into multiple micro-beams, reducing hotspots. Ideal for supermarkets, open-plan offices, and logistics centres where uniform illuminance is critical.

4. PC Diffuser
Frosted polycarbonate diffuser creating a soft, uniform light output with no visible LED hotspots. Preferred for retail environments, healthcare, and hospitality where a warm, glare-free ambience is required. Also reduces the visual brightness of the trunking itself.

5. IP67 Central Linear Lens
Fully sealed IP67 optical insert for wet, dusty, or washdown environments. Used in food production facilities, commercial kitchens, car wash facilities, and outdoor covered areas. Maintains full optical performance with complete ingress protection.

6. Double Central Linear Lens
Dual-beam symmetrical lens delivering a wider coverage area from a single trunking run. Reduces the number of trunking runs required for wide aisles in supermarkets, warehouses, and logistics facilities. Maximises lumen efficiency per metre of installed trunking.
Beam Angle Options: Matching Light Distribution to Space
Beyond the lens type, YNDLUX linear trunking is available in five beam angle configurations — each optimised for a specific commercial application. Selecting the correct beam angle is critical for achieving target lux levels efficiently.
30° Narrow Beam
Concentrated light column ideal for high-bay warehouses and tall racking systems. Delivers maximum lux intensity directly below the trunking run. Best used at mounting heights above 6m where a tight beam is needed to reach the floor at adequate levels. Typical application: logistics centres, cold storage, high-rack warehouses.
60° Medium Beam
The most versatile angle — balances intensity and coverage. Suitable for standard commercial spaces at 3–6m mounting height: offices, showrooms, mid-height retail, and production floors. Achieves uniform illuminance with standard trunking spacing.
90° Wide Beam
Maximum spread for low-ceiling environments and wide-aisle coverage. Reduces the number of trunking rows required by covering a wider floor area from each run. Ideal for supermarkets, open-plan offices at 2.5–3.5m, and DIY retail with wide bays.
Single Asymmetric 30°
Directs light asymmetrically to one side — designed for perimeter shelving, wall-washing, and aisle-edge lighting. The asymmetric distribution maximises lux on vertical surfaces (shelves, walls) while minimising light spill in the opposite direction. Typical application: supermarket shelf lighting, retail wall displays, library shelving.
Double Asymmetric
Splits the beam equally in two opposite asymmetric directions — ideal for central-aisle mounting between two rows of shelving. A single trunking run lights both shelving rows simultaneously, reducing installation costs by up to 50% versus two separate runs. Typical application: supermarket central aisles, warehouse shelving corridors, retail double-sided gondolas.
Beam Angle Selection Guide
- Warehouse / high-bay (>6m) → 30° Narrow + Transparency Lens
- Office / showroom (3–5m) → 60° Medium + Anti-Glare Lens
- Supermarket wide aisle (3–4m) → 90° Wide + Matrix Lens
- Shelf / wall lighting → Single Asymmetric 30° + Transparency Lens
- Central aisle double-shelf → Double Asymmetric + Transparency or Matrix Lens
- Food production / wet areas → 60° or 90° + IP67 Lens
IES files are available for every beam angle and lens combination — enabling precise DIALux simulation before project commitment.
Matching Optical Angle to Application
Choosing the correct lens for your application is as important as choosing the wattage:
- Office / showroom → Anti-Glare Lens (UGR <19, visual comfort)
- Warehouse / high-bay → Transparency Lens (maximum lumen output, CIBSE LG1 compliant)
- Supermarket / open retail → Matrix Lens or Double Central Linear (even uniformity, U0 ≥ 0.6)
- Hospitality / healthcare → PC Diffuser (soft, glare-free ambience)
- Food production / wet areas → IP67 Lens (ingress protection + full photometric performance)
